In the interest of conciseness, I initially left out two striking examples of the CBC’s journalistic failures, both of which deserve mention here:

First, as early on in the conflict as October 2023, more than 800 scholars of international law and genocide studies – including several Canadians – signed a public statement warning that Israel may be committing genocidal acts in Gaza. They urged the international community to fulfill its legal duty to prevent genocide, citing dehumanizing rhetoric from Israeli officials as a precursor and incitement to genocide: Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared, “We are fighting human animals and we act accordingly,” while Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian said, “There will be no electricity and no water, there will only be destruction. You wanted hell, you will get hell.” Israeli historian Raz Segal, a leading Holocaust and genocide scholar, went further, calling Israel’s actions since October 7 “a textbook case of genocide.”

Not one of these extraordinary statements was reported by the CBC.

It is inconceivable that the public broadcaster would ignore such warnings if, for instance, a Muslim country were indiscriminately bombing an Israeli enclave, or if Vladimir Putin had described Ukrainian civilians as “human animals.” In those cases, such remarks would likely dominate CBC coverage.

Second, the CBC has also failed to adequately cover the massive, ongoing protests against the slaughter in Gaza, which have taken place weekly across Canada and worldwide. On the rare occasions it does report on them, the coverage tends to spotlight isolated incidents that can be framed as antisemitic, disruptive, or extreme — rather than presenting the broader reality of a global movement demanding an end to genocide. Just as troubling, CBC reports have routinely sidelined the voices of diverse groups – including Jewish organizations outspokenly opposing Israel’s actions – thereby distorting public perception of these demonstrations and mischaracterizing them as fringe or extreme rather than part of a growing international outcry.

Thank you for this most excellent article. CBC’s use of our public broadcasting system to engage in propaganda promoting genocide by Israel against Palestinians through suppressing accurate news and broadcasting biased and misleading coverage that promotes continuation of the genocide, ensures impunity for perpetrators and prevents remedies for victims. CBC propaganda violates international law which prohibits the use of propaganda to promote genocide or other crimes or incites discrimination, hostility or vilence. International law Article 20 of the ICCPR) prohibit such propaganda. .
